Title Tag - The Basics

The title tag is probably the most important tag (meta tag) for your search engine ranking. It is invisible on the actual page in your browser but it is there in the code and visible at the top of your browser.

Most search engines including Google will also show your title tag as the clickable link (Anchor Text) in the engine results page (SERP), so changing them can result in more clickthroughs.

Title tags hold a lot of algorithmic weight in search engines (that means changing them is a big deal!); they are as important as your content and the number of links pointing to your pages (these being the other most important things).

Do I put the Company Name in the Title Tag?

Your company name should be in the title of your homepage, and some although not necessarily all, of your other site pages.

Use Specific Keyword Phrases in the title

Use something like Google's keyword suggestion tool to find out what are the best keywords to put in your title. Choosing Keywords is another ball game altogether, however, in our SEO training page we chose "SEO Training" and "Search Engine Optimisation Courses" as our most important keywords. It's a good idea to include a geographical location here if your business is local or regional rather than national or international.

For example we could have used "SEO Training | Search Engine Optimisation Courses | London"

Try to keep your title no longer than 10 words or 12 max.

When you can, you should be writing gripping titles instead of factual ones.

Don't waste time and effort trying to produce the ?perfect title tag' because there is no such thing. Its better to try out different ideas so to find out which brings in the most traffic. You may find that one idea gets a better ranking, but the other gets clicked more, effectively making up the difference. You should monitor this using Google Analytics.

You can produce you title tags after you've written a keyword rich page, then you can base your tag on that.

If you write good content the information you need to choose your keywords should be there on your page. Simply choose the most relevant keyword phrases and write a compelling title tag.

You don't always need to use an exact sentence pulled from your copy as your title tag, or use the exact wording that's in your top headline, it is important, however, to have a unique sentence or a compelling string of words in your title tag.
